Resigned to Viral Marketing

Fed up with a boss that wouldn’t listen, by being too focussed on viewing numbers and not quality content, Marina Shifrin decided to quit… but rather than simply writing an email giving her reasons why, she created a video herself to get her point across… and with 13,000,000 views in 5 days, she’s obviously getting a lot of attention, news networks, job offers, even several marriage proposals!?!? plus of course the attention of her former employer… who have also released a Meme video themselves, saying, “We’re Hiring”

As I’ve posted before: A campaign can give your product & service exposure, but it can’t make your business a success, only your customers can do that. If your campaign goes viral, great, but if your business or offerings aren’t as well, then the campaign was probably pointless. You want people talking about how good your product is, not how good your viral campaign was.

With 13M hits and counting within 5 days of posting the video, she’s also made a nice chunk of change out of advertising on YouTube.
My rough calculation: Views x 50% of CPM (cost per 1,000 adverts)
13,000,000 x (.5 x  $6.20/1,000) = $40,000

The Real Thing

I really like coca cola, when I was in my 20′s I’d drink about 2-3 ltrs of the stuff a day (yes you read that correctly, that’s 8-10 cans a day), and contrary to what you may think, I was as thin then as I am now, plus I still have all my own teeth!

But Coca-Cola’s having a tough time at the moment, with greater public awareness on the obesity epidemic and the reported dangers of artificial sweeteners such as Aspartame, their sales of diet coke have dropped by 3% (diet Pepsi down 6.2%), while Coke is down 1% (Pepsi down 3.4%). Coca-Cola announced earlier in the year that they would start a new advertising campaign defending the use of these sweeteners. But let’s hope for their sake that it’s more successful than their previous campaign on obesity.

That didn’t go too well, going by the drop in sales, the comments on their Youtube and Facebook pages, plus the meme video with an overdubbed voice over that appeared within a couple of days of the original video. I can’t help but think they would have been better off not trying to spin it in such a positive manner, and rather than telling us to come together, maybe they should have come a bit clearer with the facts, as without doing so, they simply left themselves open.

Maybe due to the online backlash from last time, is why so far, they’ve stuck to print advertising, but in this world of social media, they know better than anyone, you need to be out their participating in dialogue, and not simply broadcasting your message

London Riots: Looting by Organised Crime

While London was ablaze last night so was Twitter with #londonriots, not that any of it was worth reading, mostly knee jerk reactions saying, we need the army on the streets, oh I’m ashamed to be from the UK, if the police can’t handle this what about the Olympics, bring out the water cannons, use rubber bullets as it worked in Northern Ireland, where are the police, they’re not doing anything, they’re letting this happen etc

In situations like this there’s not much the Police can do except try to contain the rioters, or monitor them the best they can, gather evidence and act when this has all subsided.  This is about damage limitation, but their role first and foremost is to protect the public, engaging with the looters would be a Pyrrhic Victory,  it would escalate the situation, becoming violent, there would be increased casualties on both sides, and injury to innocent bystanders and homeowners would  increase… looting and property damage is an acceptable cost. Thankfully no one has died yet, there’s been casualties, an elderly man is in critical condition due to head injuries, but that appears to have been the worst of it so far. The Police are in a difficult situation, damned if they do, damned if they don’t… the public and the media are all over them for not doing enough, but once they act, they are scrutinised for their every action they take… I know they’re not exactly squeaky clean themselves, but it won’t be long before we hear reports of people saying they were wrongly accosted by the Police, or roughly handled… well it’s quite simple, go home, if you’re not in the middle of it, then you can’t be there to be wrongly accused!

This isn’t a political gathering or demonstration, these are opportunists, knowing they can get away with theft as the Police are stretched too thinly across London (according to eye witnesses, there were only 4-5 Police Officers in Riot gear in Ealing to start with, the same for Clapham, the rest were simply in ordinary uniforms). The outbreaks in other major cities around the country support this. This isn’t racially motivated, nor is it just a disillusioned young society, or limited to disadvantaged or poorer areas of London (as there were riots in my part of London last night, Ealing).

There are growing reports from eye witnesses that the mobs are very well organised, all communicating via mobiles, but that they’re not as young as initial reports make out, amongst the thick of it there appear to be a good mix of older generation, whom appear to be orchestrating sways of the mob… this is organised crime by opportunists.

How much longer will this continue? Probably a couple more days, why? due to incredible Police strategies? nope… because it will rain tomorrow night, and not even mindless looters want to get their newly acquired 42″ Plasma screen wet!

Below is a video of a woman, whom is obviously fed up and ashamed of the looters, (thankfully there is a transcript). But I doubt it would have made any difference, these are mindless thugs, looking for trouble, the type that are in it for themselves and will grab whatever they can. Whether the graffiti on the wall behind her was written by them, or was there prior to the riot, either way it shows the writers level of literacy (or lack of)… or is there a campaign against people from the Cameroon that I’m unaware of?

“This is a fucking realtiy. Allow out burning peoples property. Allow out burning peoples shops that they work so hard to start thier business. Do you understand? That lady is trying to make her busines work and you lot wana go and burn it up? For what? To say your war-ing and your bad man? This is about a man who got shot in Tottenham. This anit about having fun on the road and burning up the place. Get it real black people. Get real. Do it for a cause. If your fighting for a cause then fight for a fucking cause. You lot piss me the fuck off! I’m shamed to be a Hackney person. Because we are not all gathering together and fighting for a cause. We are running out of Footlocker and theifin shoes. Dirty thiefs ya know. Tut ”

Homeless Guy with Golden Voice

I saw this video on Phil’s Unionversity website yesterday and was blown away by this guys voice, the voice just doesn’t go with what you’re seeing, he’s amazing! Drugs and alcohol have taken their toll on his life and he’s fallen on hard times, but the social web has shown it’s a force for good again, as within a day or so of this video being posted on YouTube, it’s received almost 10million views and has lead to radio stations fighting over him, we’ll undoubtedly see or hear more from Ted Williams in the near future. The second video is an interview with him on the Early Show, warning, it will choke you up, but do watch it.

Sour

Jay sent me the link to this music video at the weekend assuming I’d like it, he was right, it’s wonderful, and 3 million other You Tube users think the same. Plus it would appear Pepsi were inspired by the idea for their Pepsi Refresh Project (One People) commercial

“This music video was shot for Sour’s ‘Hibi no Neiro’ (Tone of everyday) from their first mini album ‘Water Flavor EP’. The cast were selected from the actual Sour fan base, from many countries around the world. Each person and scene was filmed purely via webcam.
Director: Masashi Kawamura + Hal Kirkland + Magico Nakamura + Masayoshi Nakamura”

Video Jukebox Anyone?

Want to download a video from YouTube (or most websites?)
Install this plugin for Firefox http://www.downloadhelper.net/

Of course most files stored on YouTube are in Adobe’s Flash format (.flv), so you will require something to play them back. You can use VLC, but wouldn’t it be better if you could us QuickTime? Download and install Perian (you’ll need to restart your Mac afterwards). Now QuickTime can playback .flv files, plus numerous other formats it couldn’t before. If you have QuickTime Pro on your Mac, you can even export the .flv files to different file formats, if not then download Evom by The Little Factory it’s simply drag and drop from here, drop the .flv onto the Evom window and choose the file format you want, that’s it!

And all of that is free!

Still talking about video, need to Rip a DVD, or want to play them back on your iPod, iPhone or hard drive? Then download Ripit by The Little Factory it costs $20, but it’s child’s play to use, and the results are very impressive!

Now I know how I’ll be spending the next couple of months, transferring my DVD collection to the hard drive that’s hanging out the back of the Mac Mini I have connected to my flat screen! Now if only the Mac Mini could connect properly to my surround sound and I’d be sorted!

There’s An Ad For That

You have to admire Verizon’s audacity in creating this advert to try and snag AT&T customers over to their network, by playing upon Apple’s “There’s an App for That” tagline used in their iPhone & App Store adverts (in case you’ve been living in a cave for the past year, you’ll find plenty of them here).

But it’s not just Verizon that’s brand jacking Apple’s App Store advert, Pepsi have created a chat up application named “AMP UP Before You Score“… No doubt this will offend some, but that’s the whole point, they’ll get plenty of free publicity that way… anyway it’s an amusing and nicely designed iPhone app, plus it’s coded well.

Thank You Geezus

I know it’s very immature but what the hell, it made me laugh (especially 3 minutes in). Although it’s worth bearing in mind that this is actually quite funny even without the dubbing (f*cking scary actually!). Special thanks to Ed Alves for posting this on his Facebook wall, what terrific friends I have!

What In Dear God Is Microsoft Thinking!

Microsoft have surpassed themselves, as only Microsoft can. I never thought my nomination of their Songsmith advert for worst video of 2009 could be beaten… unbelievably, they’ve proven me wrong!

The Windows 7 Launch House Party? At first I thought this was a parody, but no, it’s actually real! Just make sure your diary is full between 22-27 October, otherwise you could end up at a house party, with your IT department!?!?
